Online Summer Learning for Students in Grades K-12

Announcement: Natick Online Summer Learning for Students in Grades K-12
Posted on 06/05/2020

While health circumstances have prevented us from being able to offer face-to-face instruction this summer, we are excited to offer Natick Online Summer Learning free of charge to Natick students, through two online programs: K-8 Online Summer Learning and 7-12 Edgenuity. Both of these programs will offer engaging virtual opportunities to practice and build upon key academic skills with teacher support over the course of the summer.

We encourage you to read about our program offerings and to reach out to Dan Hausermann (dhausermann@natickps.org) or Eric Fries (efries@natickps.org) with any questions.

K-8 Online Summer Learning:

This program will give rising 1st through rising 9th graders more opportunities to practice and build upon key standards and skills focused on during the 2019-2020 school year in literacy and math. Parents who enroll in K-8 Online Summer Learning will sign their child up on a week by week basis. Classes will run Monday through Thursday for five weeks: July 6 through August 6.

Students will have a team of two teachers (one math teacher and one ELA teacher), and will attend classes through Google Meet for an hour and a half each day:

  •  Half-hour Math block
  • Half-hour Literacy block
  • Half-hour Office Hours/Independent Work block that they will be expected to attend with one or both of their teachers.

Each grade level has specific skills that it will focus on each week. Please reach out with any questions about what types of skills will be prioritized this year.

We will offer early morning sessions and late morning sessions, depending on grade level:

Rising 1st grade: 9:00-10:30

Rising 2nd grade: 10:30-12:00

Rising 3rd grade: 9:00-10:30

Rising 4th grade: 10:30-12:00

Rising 5th grade: 9:00-10:30

Rising 6th grade: 10:30-12:00

Rising 7th grade: 9:00-10:30

Rising 8th grade: 10:30-12:00

7-12 Online Summer Learning with Edgenuity:

This program will use the online learning platform Edgenuity to give rising 7th graders through rising seniors opportunities for mostly self-directed learning in a particular content area. Edgenuity offers a wide variety of courses with all instruction provided virtually via videos and engaging lessons on their platform. Parents will sign their child up on a course-by-course basis, and they will work independently, as well as checking in with a teacher advisor on a weekly basis and attending teacher office hours to answer any questions along the way.

Each course is expected to take roughly 18-20 hours, plus teacher check-ins. This means that each student would be expected to put in roughly one hour per day for a particular course. Courses will be offered in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies, and are designed to cover skills that might have been missed during school closures during the last three months of the school year.

These classes are not for academic credit. They are an opportunity to hone skills over the course of the summer. This program is separate from NPS’s Credit Recovery program.

Teachers will be available Monday through Thursday from July 6-August 6 and will have a regular meeting time with each student during the week. There will be one required check-in each week that will be booked at the teacher’s discretion. Courses will be available to finish between August 6 and August 26 without teacher support.

Summer Courses Offered Through Edgenuity:

*** Please pay attention to the grade level for each class. Classes are based on the 2019-20 school year. For instance, rising 7th graders would be enrolled in 6th-grade classes.
